Ali Troup + Penny Ryan

This collaborative exhibition between photographic artist Penny Ryan and floral artist Ali Troup was born from a shared love of collecting vintage vases. Ali’s floral arrangements explore three-dimensional space, while Penny’s photography transforms this into a two-dimensional interpretation.

Tapping into imagined histories and settings, these photographs celebrate the memories, rituals, function, and joy that the vessels may have held for previous custodians—each photograph reflecting its unique personality alongside the nostalgia and memories held by the viewer.

Selected prints are framed in Penny’s personal collection of vintage frames, a nod to the preciousness of objects and the personalities they hold. Inspired by the stories, the space, and the prints on display, Ali has created floral works that complement the photographs, reintroducing a three-dimensional element to the exhibition and continuing the conversation around form.

Both artists are based in Castlemaine on Dja Dja Wurrung country.

Ali (she/her) | Floral designer

Always searching for the philosophy and meaning, Ali is enthralled by the beauty of plants and people. Through her floral art practice, she delves into a world where individuality is expressed through flowers. Whether she is spinning a few records or collecting vintage vases, she is always ready for the perfect drop.

Penny (she/her) | Photographer

A collector of precious things, Penny feels both excited and a little sad to see her vintage frame collection find new homes. Her personal work creates quite visual narratives that explore and revalue the power of the feminine and domestic spheres of previous generations. While she loves tapping into nostalgia, she's feels somewhat uncomfortable with reminiscing.
