Pandemonium | Katherine Douglas
Katherine Douglas is a life-long, card carrying, flag-flying, bird-nerd.
As an environmental artist, a core focus of her practice is to explore the plight of Australian birds impacted by habitat loss. The spectacular and unique parrots of Australia are her primary focus.
Since childhood, Katherine has drawn parrots and cockatoos on every surface. The opportunity to paint all fifty-seven species of Australian parrots and cockatoos for one singular show is a long-held aspiration.
Pandemonium is the collective noun for a group of parrots, an apt title and perfect descriptor highlighting the uniqueness, the quirkiness, the raucousness and riot of colour and joy these magnificent birds bring to our backyards, forests, fields, deserts and skies.
The works are painted on reclaimed timber, from her own home. The weathered paint colour is coincidentally Eucalypt, a nod to a primary habitat of these jewels of the avian world, and a physical piece of Katherine’s own habitat, her home.
With many Australian parrots now endangered, and H5 bird flu on our shores it is vital to be aware of the birds in our environs, and do all we can to ensure their survival.Â
